WH Smith plans to open its new store in Royston High Street next month.
The company has taken over the premises previously occupied by Martins Newsagents, which closed on Sunday.
A spokesman for WH Smith said: "Work has started to renovate the shop and we hope it will be open by mid-July."
The post office on the site will remain in operation throughout the duration of the work.
The Stationery Cupboard in the High Street has taken over the sale of daily and Sunday newspapers and The Crow while the work is carried-out.
