MEMBERS of the 1st Ashwell Brownies have been hard at work clearing weeds from Ashwell Springs.

They took on the task so that ducks would not face any obstacles on Sunday during the Ashwell Duck Race.

The event has been organised in aid of the local charity Diapalante, which is raising money to set up and run a furnishing workshop for disabled people in Mauritania.

The charity was set up in 2005 after Ashwell student Caroline Chandler spent a gap year working with a veterinary charity in Mauritania.

She was so touched by the plight of the people there that she committed herself to raising funds for an animal vaccination centre so they could protect their cattle from disease.

The vaccination centre was completed in 2006 - and now the charity wants to help solve the problems of disabled people.

It wants to set up a workshop which will offer employment and training in making shoes, clothing and upholstery.

n The Ashwell Duck Race will be taking place between 3-5pm.
