A lollipop person is still being sought to help children near three of Royston’s schools.

The crossing patrol usually stationed in Garden Walk, Royston, has been unmanned since before Christmas, with children at the nearby Meridian, Greneway and Icknield Walk schools having to safely negotiate the traffic by themselves.

Royston’s county councillor Fiona Hill said: “The county council hasn’t been able to find anyone to take over the crossing yet, the vacancy has been advertised at all the schools but no one has come forward yet. The road meets all the criteria to have a crossing patrol so we don’t want to lose it, but we just need to find the right person.”

Anyone interested in the post, which involves patrols before and after school each day, should contact Heather Hill, the county council’s crossing patrol manager, on 01992 556815.

As reported in The Crow last month, action is being taken to combat dangerous driving in Garden Walk, and Cllr Hill confirmed that provision has been made in the coming year’s local highways budget work in the area. A feasibility study is currently being prepared to look at the best options to improve road safety in Garden Walk.
