A FUN-loving woman from Bassingbourn has celebrated her 100th birthday - and confessed that she knew that she always would.

Florence Day, a resident of The Limes residential home, became a centenarian this week and marked the occasion with a party.

Talking before her birthday, she said: "I'm looking forward to spending the day with all my family. It's a special occasion.

"But I always knew I would. Back in the 1960s a gypsy in Clacton said that I would live to celebrate my 100th birthday . . . and here I am.

"She also said that I would have a granddaughter who would become a school teacher."

Mrs Day also puts her longevity down to leading an active life, by partaking in crochet and Scrabble and "not ever doing anybody a bad turn".

In her early years, Mrs Day worked as a golf ball maker in a factory in East London before marrying her best friend's next door neighbour Jimmy Day in 1930.

After the war she became a housewife, giving birth to sons Alan and Norman, whom she shares a birthday with.

Mrs Day was widowed in 1976 and has lived in Bassingbourn for the past 10 years, moving from Steeple Morden after originally spending most of her life in East London.

Norman Day described his mum as a real character.

He said: "She has a great sense of humour, likes a joke and seems to have an answer for everything."

Mrs Day also has four grandchildren, Mark, Gary, Jennifer and Melody, who is a teacher, and four great grandchildren, Jonathan, Rosie, Richard and Naomi.

Housing officer Eileen Allan said: "Florence is a very popular resident, who's always telling us stories.

"She's a lovely lady, who has reached a marvellous age and she's done so without any medication, which is amazing.
