A MEMBER of the Barley branch of the Royal British Legion has completed 30 years of service - and 28 of those years have been as standard bearer.

Daphne Lincoln was presented with a certificate in recognition of her work by Barbara Todd, chairman of the Hertfordshire county Royal British Legion.

Mrs Lincoln, whose two daughters and two granddaughters attended the presentation, said: "It was a wonderful surprise. I had no idea what was happening."

Mrs Lincoln, joined the women's section at Barley when it was formed three decades ago and became standard bearer two years later when the standard was introduced.

The Barley women's section held a meeting before Mrs Lincoln was asked to present a gift to the Barley Town House.

A series of books about Barley were framed and displayed on a wall in the town house.

Sophia Wrangham, secretary of the Town House, received the gift.

She said: "I admire all of the members of the Barley women's section. They raise large amounts of money even though there are only 10 in the branch.
