LATE-night drinking is causing "absolute bedlam", claims a town councillor.

Cllr Lindsay Davidson told Royston Town Council's general purposes and highways committee on Monday evening: "There is a severe problem with late-night drinking in the town centre.

"There are times when it is absolute bedlam. It is a real problem" she said.

The town council is to urge North Herts District Council to examine late-night pub opening hours during a comprehensive review of its licensing policy.

County councillor Doug Drake said the town council should play a role in the licensing review.

"These are the kind of things that really matter to us," he said.

He said one problem, too, was with the playing of loud music on licenced properties.

And Cllr Craig Doel complained of people "falling about" in the street after drinking sessions.

The district council review will be looking at the impact current licencing laws are having on the area and seeing whether any changes need to be made.
