Five councillors from county, district and town level were among around 20 riders who donned Santa outfits for the 40-minute pedal around Royston.

The campaign is pushing for a safe cycle route over the A10 linking Royston with Melbourn, meaning those on two wheels can easily travel up to Cambridge.

Those behind it have set up a Crowdfunding page to show the willingess oflocals to dip into their own pockets, and have so far raised more than £1,400 from 67 donors.

About the ride, campaign member and Cambs county councillor Susan van de Ven said: “We had a great ride around the Royston Sustrans Network on Saturday, with four young children cycling the entire route and everyone wearing some kind of silly Santa gear.

“A lot so people honked their horns in support and we were very pleased to have such a positive reception.”

The Crowdfunding page is set to close tonight, with the results of the group’s efforts being presented at a City Deal executive meeting on January 15.
