A SCHEME to introduce keep clear markings outside schools is to be discussed by members of North Herts District Council's highways partnership. A survey has been carried out and schools where keep clear markings are needed have been placed on a priority list. But a report to members says that the provision of markings outside schools will cost £1,400 each and the scheme could prove "contentious" to nearby residents who could suffer the results of a lack of parking. The report continued that to enforce the keep clear markings, parking attendants would have to visit sites at specific times. "The current staffing levels of parking attendants would not permit the extensive coverage necessary to provide regular enforcement," said the report. But is was recognised that "parent parking" problems existed at almost every school. The priority list for keep clear markings is led by Ashwell Primary School in Silver Street; Reed First School in Jacksons Lane; The Meridian School in Garden Walk, Royston and St Mary's RC Primary School in Melbourn Road, Royston. Councillors will be asked to approve a three-year programme which will eventually see all schools in the area given the opportunity to introduce the scheme.
