A Royston Runner, who was told he would never read, write, or speak, is preparing for his first Flora London marathon.

Karl Howard, 20, of Orchard Way, has been running for the past four years, and will finally be running the 26-mile course after three attempts at applying.

Karl, who suffers from dyspraxia, does not let his disability get in the way of his love of running and has already run a marathon around Loch Ness.

He said: "I know it's going to be tough, but I have been running about 15 miles per week in preparation so I'm on course to finish the marathon in three-and-a-half-hours."

The former Royston Town Colts player hopes to raise at least £1,000 for Woolgrove School in Letchworth which provides for children with moderate learning difficulties.

Karl attended the school for seven years and during his time there was given support and encouragement.

Karl said: "Woolgrove gave me confidence and pushed me to my limits. This will give me a chance to give something back."

Karl who would like to run the New York marathon, has watched the London marathon in previous years and loved the atmosphere.

He said it was that which motivated him to run, as well as the camaraderie of his running club colleagues.

Karl's mother Susan said: "To see him do something like this gives hope to other parents."

"Woolgrove gave Karl so much. When he was five we were told he would never read, write, or speak, and without Woolgrove he wouldn't have got where he is today."
