WASTE chiefs are urging people to help reduce the mountains of junk mail that are delivered each day.
Cambridgeshire County Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council have launched a campaign to increase the number of registrations to the Mail Preference Service and the opt-out facility run by the Royal Mail.
This allows people to have unwanted mail prevented from being delivered to their homes.
Estimates suggest that in Cambridgeshire junk mail accounts for 10,500 tonnes of waste each year.
Victor Perez, the county council's waste campaigns officer, said people registering for the scheme could see a reduction of more than 30 per cent in unwanted mail.
"Simple actions like these have a positive environmental and economic impact," he said.
