Pupils at Melbourn Primary School went back in time last week to enjoy a tea party that looked like it was held in 1945.
As well as the tea part, children enjoyed war-time games played during the Victory in Europe Day celebrations like tiddlywinks, beetle, hopskotch and playing cards. They also listened to talks from an evacuee and a soldier.
“They all had their Union Jack flags, waved them at the announcement that war was over and celebrated by eating food together,” said assistant headteacher Rebecca Pine
Jessica Thomas, aged 10, said: “It was absolutely amazing going back to the Second World War and experiencing what it would have been like.”
And 11-year-old Evie Chipperfield said: “At the end we got the rations of sweets they would have had in a week and there was more than we expected.”
Mrs Pine added: “It has been fantastic to immerse the children in the Second World War.
“We evacuated the children to Foxton, we have visited Duxford Imperial War Museum and the VE Day party brought the topic to a natural end.”
