A Bassingbourn man has been left highly frustrated at the news that a water main that has burst five times in the last 10 months – flooding his garden and destroying parts in his garage – may not be fixed until next April.

Jason Hort, who lives in Elm Tree Drive, has been signed off work for stress due to the continuing saga.

Since moving into his house 14 years ago, he says the Cambridge Water main has burst about 15 times, and every time someone is sent out to fix it, they say it needs to be replaced.

He said: “It’s just ridiculous. They are being wholly unreasonable.

“The last time it happened, you could row a boat in it.

“When it happens, people don’t have any water to brush their teeth.”

At one point, the flooding was so bad that it seeped into Jason’s garage, destroying bespoke parts for a classic car he is restoring.

Jason has been offered full compensation for the damage, but he fears this may not be enough if disaster strikes again.

Jason said: “At the end of the day it has burst five times in the last 10 months.

“They need to say it will be replaced within the next four weeks.

“We are living here with the possibility that it could go at any time.”

A spokeswoman for Cambridge Water said: “The water main which feeds Elm Tree Drive has been identified as a priority for replacement following a number of bursts.

“On August 15 and on September 3 this main burst again causing flooding to one of the properties.

“In light of this we have escalated our plan to replace the main and work should be carried out before the end of the financial year.

“We would like to express our sincere apologies to the occupier, and the other residents of Elm Tree Drive for any inconvenience caused as a result of the recent burst mains.”
