A TOILET is set to be closed while at least £155,000 will be spent on improvements to other public conveniences in Royston.
The proposals will be published in a report to be discussed when North Herts District Council's Royston area committee meets next month.
Plans on improvements come after three pubic toilets in Royston failed to meet legislation under the Disability Discrimination Act. It says that provision must be made for the needs of disabled people.
The toilets in question are at The Cross, Fish Hill and the bus station in Barkway Street.
It has now been proposed that the toilets at The Cross and Fish Hill will be amended for improvements while the bus station toilets will be closed.
A district council spokesman said: "It was decided that because of the poor conditions and failure to meet current standards, improvements had to be made."
It has been proposed that facilities at The Cross need minor works as the building itself is in a sound condition while more work is believed to be needed at the Fish Hill site, which is in a poor state.
It has been recommended that the building should be demolished and replaced with a new facility.
The report said the bus station toilet would need to be replaced.
But the proposal to close the Fish Hill toilets has caused anger.
Pensioner Jim Baker, 80, of Great Hormead, said: "My wife and I regularly use the toilets at the bus stop, as do a lot of elderly people. It is especially used by people on bus and coach trips.
"This is completely wrong and I can't believe that they are thinking of closing them."
His wife, Pat Baker, said: "This is ridiculous.
