NEARLY 200 sheep which grazed on Therfield Heath last year have produced more than 250 lambs. The Dorset sheep which were crossed with mule, black-faced Suffolk rams, produced 275 lambs in a barn at Thrift Farm. The ewes and lambs were kept in the barn for a month and have been turned out on to grass where they are being fed hay and sugar beet. However the lambs will leave the farm between March 25 and the end of May. Robert Law, the owner of the sheep and Thrift Farm, said: "In their lifetimes the ewes will produce on average five crops of lambs, and we hope this year that our 2000 ewes produce 3500 lambs". The 190 ewes that grazed the heath are part of a 2000- ewe flock kept in the Royston area. They will return to graze the heath in late May, and will remain until the autumn.
