THE MANAGER of Woolworths in Royston has paid tribute to the store's dedicated staff as it closed down for good this week.

The shop, in Royston High Street, closed its doors for the last time on Tuesday, with shoppers rushing to snap up the last remaining items on sale.

Mark Halfacre, who has been branch manager in Royston for the last five years, said that the closure marked "the end of an era".

He added: "I would like to thank all my colleagues in the branch for all their hard work and commitment over the years, and especially over this Christmas period.

"Believe me, these staff have been through the mill emotionally."

Woolworths in Royston is one of the last shops in the chain to close, with all but 150 stores nationwide having closed last weekend.

Mr Halfacre, who has been with the company for 15 years, said: "As there is no Woolworths redundancy package, staff with up to 23 years service will be signing on at job centres this week. What a sad day this is.

"Also, special thanks must go to the people of Royston for their heartfelt messages and support for us.

"You made our jobs a little bit easier to cope with over the festive period.
