AN animal carer had her head shaved to raise money for the Wood Green Animal Shelter in Heydon - and raised more than £1,500.

Linda Pollard made the decision to help raise much-needed cash after the shelter was threatened with closure last year.

The 48-year-old had her collar length hair shaved off at the Heydon shelter on Saturday.

Linda said: "I've gone from having fairly long hair to a grade zero. It's weird having no hair at the moment. It's very strange, especially when I look in the mirror.

"I think it will take a while to get used to, but it will grow back. At least it's easier to get ready in the morning. My husband has been prepared for months, and he's very proud. It's not often he has longer hair than me."

The head shave was Linda's idea and over the past year members of the shelter have been raising funds to keep the Wood Green shelter open.

"You always see men getting their head shaved for charity, but what's the big deal in that? For a woman to do it is a big thing. I thought it's all for a good cause so why not?"

Linda, who has worked at the shelter for four years, said: "The money raised will help the shelter greatly. After the threat last year Heydon will be staying open, which is down to some very hard work."

The head shave was one of a number of activities taking place during the shelter's Animal Awareness Day in which it raised more than £3,700.

The Mayor of Royston, Cllr Lynn Berry, was one of the people who visited the event.
