VILLAGE children have been adding a touch of colour to fund-raising.

Pupils at Steeple Morden Primary School held a cake sale and took part in a penalty shoot out as part of the Big Yellow Day raising money for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF).

The charity is important to the school, as one of its pupils, Oscar Davies, suffers from a rare liver condition.

Oscar has biliary atresia, a rare liver condition in which his bile duct blocks and builds up over time, poisoning his liver.

The seven-year-old has to take medication five times a day into his mouth with a plastic syringe.

Oscar's mum Helen Slater, from Steeple Morden, said: "Oscar was diagnosed at nine-and-a-half weeks old, and has since had to have a life-saving operation.

"He might still need a transplant, but at the moment he is doing very well against all odds.

"The thing about the disease is we don't know what's going to happen from one day to the next."

The aim of the Big Yellow Day is to raise awareness and funds for CLDF, which supports children like Oscar and their families, and more than 160 events were held nationwide.

Oscar arranged the yellow cake and biscuit sale at the school, along with staff at the Steeple Morden after School and Holiday Club (Smash).

His brother Becan, 10, with the help of some friends, organised a penalty shootout competition, also at the school.

Meanwhile, sister Phoebe enjoyed her second birthday with a party at home.

Helen, who has raised more than £10,000 for CLDF, said: "There were more than 60 children and parents at Phoebe's party, and everyone really enjoyed it.

"We asked people not to bring presents, but to donate the money to The Big Yellow Friday instead."

The party, which included a bouncy castle and entertainer, raised £280, while the Big Yellow fundraising events at the primary school raised more than £400.

Helen will be holding a fashion party at ESSE Retail and Therapy in Melbourn on May 9 to raise further funds for CLDF.

Tickets are £10 and include a glass of wine.
