A COMPANY has stepped in to help stop some public toilets from going down the drain.

JK Environmental of Royston agreed to carry out work on the toilets near Royston Bus Station free of charge, following an appeal from veteran campaigner Terry Hutt.

Mr Hutt said: "The toilets have been out of action because they were all blocked up.

"They are a community facility so I called JK Environmental to see if they could help us out.

"It is brilliant to see a business prepared to support the community by doing the work for free.

"In these times of doom and gloom and recession, it is good to know that companies still care about the town."

Peter Maasz, sales director at JK Environmental, said: "They say charity begins at home, and we were quite happy to be able help out on this occasion.

"We have trucks roaring around Royston all the while, which I imagine isn't that popular with some people, so it's nice to be able to give something back to the community."

The toilets looked set to close last year when North Herts District Council built a new block near the Priory Memorial Gardens.

However, following a prolonged campaign by Mr Hutt, nearby taxi firm Meltax agreed to take over the running of the block.

Mr Hutt added: "While the workmen were there doing the job I had three or four people come up to me and ask when the toilets would be open again, so it shows how valuable they are to the people of Royston.
