ALMOST £100,000 has been raised from the last three years of Royston's charity Pink Ribbon Run/Walk.

This year £30,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK when almost 1,000 people took part in the event on Therfield Heath in June.

The organisers handed over a cheque to Victoria Gilham, the charity's area volunteer manager, at a presentation evening at the Heath Sports Centre on Friday evening.

She told the audience of volunteers and sponsors: "This is a marvellous amount to be raised from one event.

"Every penny will help research into breast cancer and hopefully find a cure. The money raised is so important to the research work continuing," she said.

She said that £45 million-a-year was being spent on cancer research projects.

Miss Gilham added: "Where possible the money raised will be spent as locally as possible."

Michaela Huffer, one of the event's organisers, said the money raised "will make a huge difference".

She is hoping that once Gift Aid is included in the total that it will increase to almost £40,000 for this year.

The leading children's fund-raiser was eight-year-old Icknield Walk School pupil Alexa Thompson, who collected £643 from sponsorship.

She said: "I will come back next year to do it again and every year it takes places."

The leading adult fund-raiser was Judy Carriage, who collected £1,160.

And Freman College in Buntingford raised more than £4,000.

Mrs Huffer said: "The whole school gets behind the event and really gives us massive support."

Next year's Pink Ribbon Run/Walk will be taking place on Therfield Heath on June 28.

This year's event was supported and sponsored by ABA Consultants, Brooks Sports, WKH Chartered Accountants, Johnson Matthey, Curwens, Woodenhouse Design and Media, the Heath Sports Centre, the Rotary Club of Royston, The Stationery Cupboard, the Royston Runners, Tesco, Saffron Building Society, Weatherheads, the Royston Leisure Centre, Sports Kit, Way to Glow Girl, Palazzo, Freman College and The Crow.
