A 63-year-old man who was bleeding heavily after cutting his arm on an electric saw has met up with the paramedics who came to his aid – just as he began to lose consciousness.

Richard Game had been slicing logs at his home in Portway, Melbourn, when the circular saw he was using toppled on to his arm, causing an extremely deep cut.

His wife Brenda called an ambulance, and was advised by call handler Megan Llewellyn how to limit blood loss as the crew were sent on their way.

Paramedics Simon Probert, Darryl Singh and Ben Horner – based at the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust’s headquarters in Melbourn – arrived just as Richard started to lose consciousness.

They dressed Richard’s wound and stemmed the bleeding, before taking him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by ambulance. He was released three days later.

Recalling the accident on June 10, Richard said: “I couldn’t afford to panic and we were both really calm about the whole situation. My first thought was to try not to get blood on the carpet but getting to the sink fast. I was starting to lose consciousness so it’s great the paramedics came when they did.”

On Thursday – nearly four months on – the couple were reunited with the trio.

“It was really good to see them again, they’re a very special bunch,” Richard said.

Brenda added: “Megan was fantastic in telling me what to do.”

Richard has lost some use of his arm but his life has returned to normality.

About the reunion, paramedic Ben said: “It was a really nasty cut and he’d obviously lost a lot of blood after what had happened. He’s an amazing guy and it’s great to see him fit and well again.”
