The family of an elderly gentleman who fell over in Royston town centre are looking to trace the good Samaritan who helped him safely back to his home.

Reg Gypps, who is in his 80s, was heading towards Market Hill from Angel Pavement with his new glasses on when he tripped and fell over.

His nephew Matt, also from Royston, told the Crow: “He had been to the opticians, and his walking stick in the wrong hand, he misjudged the step and fell over.

“He didn’t know quite what to do, so stayed down for a bit.”

The good Samaritan, believed to be in his 40s, came out of Master Fryer chip shop and rushed to help Mr Gypps – who also believes there may have been another person who helped him up but isn’t sure.

The mystery man helped Mr Gypps into his car, and then disappeared for a few minutes. He returned with a bag of chips for the elderly gentleman’s dinner.

“My dad passed away some years back, and Reg has always looked out for me,” said Matt.

“We were away when this happened so I’m so thankful to this man for looking after him.

“He bumped himself, and he’s a bit shaken up, and he certainly wasn’t up to cooking so it was a really nice thing for the man to do.”

Matt posted a plea on the Royston Reporting Page on Facebook to try to track down the man.

He said: “A few minutes after I posted it my phone was bleeping with people commenting and sharing it, and it’s now got more than 500 likes and so many comments.

“It shows that there are lots of good people in Royston.”

Mr Gypps has lived in Royston all his life, and worked in the building trade at Erith’s Building Supplies in the town, before it became Jewsons.

He also was involved in the predecessor to the Corvus Amateur Drama Society in the 1960s and ’70s.

“My uncle is a lovely bloke and anyone who meets him says what a good bloke he is,” said Matt.

“We would like to find the good Samaritan to thank him personally.”

The incident is thought to have happened on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 12, or the following day.
