More than £3,000 has been raised by the former Royston town mayor and members of Barley’s parish church who slept out in the cold all night for a homeless charity.

Sarah Dingley linked up with Sophia Wrangham from the Church of St Margaret of Antioch through Royston’s Churches Together group for The Advent Sleepout Challenge 2017.

The initiative, by the Church Urban Fund, is in its third year and has seen people up and down the country get sponsored to transform a space into an ‘Advent stable’ and sleep out for the night.

Mrs Dingley told the Crow: “It was heart-stoppingly cold and not a little eerie in the graveyard of Barley church, with the owls hooting, wind howling and bells tolling!

“It raised awareness and helped us raise £3,269.63 at this moment in time. Some gifts were anonymously given through Sophia’s letterbox. Others are still coming in via the charity giving web page.”
