A RECORD number of people look set to enter this year's Pink Ribbon run/walk.

With days to go before the event, which takes place this Sunday at Therfield Heath, more than 650 people have already signed up to take on the three-mile course and raise cash for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Christine Brown, from the organising committee, said: "This is the most entries we've ever had at this stage of play. We usually have about 100 people turning up to race on the day, so we're on course to beat our record of 700 participants."

This week Christine collected a cheque for 600 which has been donated by The Stationery Cupboard in the High Street.

Mike Gowen, owner of the Stationery Cupboard, said: "Our customers helped raise the money by bringing in old ink and toner cartridges, which a company buys off us for recycling.

"We felt it would be nice to give something back to the community by supporting such an important local event."

One team for whom the race has special significance this year is the Royston Ladies Hockey Club.

Sadly the ladies lost one of their number, Jill Birch, to cancer earlier this year.

Club captain Lisa Thompson said: "Jill was cared for by one of hospices with which Marie Curie are involved, and quite a few of the girls - especially the Ladies 2nd Team who Jill was still playing for in December - wanted to do the Pink Ribbon Run/Walk in memory of a very active and poplar member of the club.

"Jill will be greatly missed."

Anyone wishing to enter the Pink Run on the day is advised to arrive before 10am so that they can be registered. A group warm up will take place at 10.40am, before the start of the race at 11am.
