The team at Royston and District Volunteer Centre have been visited by the new High Sheriff of Hertfordshire.
They were delighted to be chosen from organisations nominated by North Herts District Council’s Royston area committee by Will Hobhouse, who has named volunteering as one of his priorities for his term of office.
Mr Hobhouse was said to be very impressed with the comprehensive advice, information, support and training offered by Volunteer Centre manager Denise Graham and her team of volunteers.
Denise said: “We were very honoured to welcome the High Sheriff and the chairman of North Hertfordshire District Council along with their wives to our Volunteer Centre and have the opportunity to show them how we support volunteering activity across Royston and district to both volunteers and external organisations.
“He was interested to learn from trustees that the Volunteer Centre is a charity and we are having to continually fundraise to ensure that it stays open.”
The High Sheriff is a royal appointment and there is one for every county in England and Wales.
Their history and tradition goes back before the Norman Conquest and their principal formal duties today include attendance at royal visits in the county and offering support for Her Majesty’s High Court judges when on circuit.
About the centre, Denise added: “Our service is key to the successful recruitment and retention of volunteers who make local activities and services happen. Most importantly, our matching of the skills, interests and motivations of volunteers means they are placed in roles that also bring real benefits to them, like increased skills, confidence, well-being and enjoyment.”
The centre’s status as a local Do-it partner and their recent award of the White Rose Volunteer Centre Accreditation is further endorsement of the quality of service on offer to the Royston and district community.
