IT was disappointment all round for the girls from in and around Royston in Monday's Miss Hertfordshire Final - with all six missing out on the crown.

Despite the result Royston's Christina Maylor and Lisa Johnston, Candice Jones of Barrington, and Buntingford's Shireen Buttrey, Tammy Jean Smith and Laura Nuttall all had fun by taking part in a dance routine and strutting their stuff along the catwalk.

Laura said: "It was a great evening and all the girls were lovely.

"Although I didn't win I did finish in the top 15 - which was very pleasing."

Lisa Johnston said: "Everyone was very friendly and I really enjoyed myself - overall it was a good experience for me."

The Crow did, however, catch up with Jill Guiver, who won the competition in 1965.

Wowing a panel of judges, Jill was crowned Miss Royston and Miss Hertfordshire, before taking part in the televised Miss Anglia Final.

She said: "The Miss Hertfordshire competition is a wonderful event, and in those days it was quite an occasion, with hundreds of girls taking part."

"It all seems so long ago now, and as 19-year-old it was very exciting.

"To be crowned Miss Hertfordshire was fantastic and a very proud moment."

At 61, Jill now lives in Therfield, and has just celebrated the christening of her first grandson Freddie.

She said: "It's funny because people still refer to me as Miss Hertfordshire, which my family find hilarious.

"I still have all the newspaper cuttings, including the original that appeared in The Crow."

Just like the girls who took part in this year's final, Jill was interviewed by judges and had to walk down the catwalk - although she had to do it wearing a swimsuit, karate outfit, and a cocktail dress.

Jill said: "It was a nerve-wracking experience, especially because we had to do it in front of the television cameras.

"I hope all the girls had fun, and I admire all of them because it takes a lot of guts.

"I just hope whoever won got more money than I did, because I only got £25!"

The competition was won by Samantha Freedman, 18, of Aldenham.
