Former pupils from a village school are being invited to attend its centenary celebrations.

Reed First School is hosting a 100th birthday party on Saturday, June 28, from midday to 4pm.

The school first opened its doors after the harvest in 1914, welcoming 37 children aged 14 and under. Since then more than 1,100 pupils have passed through its doors.

Headteacher Jackie Harvey said: “It would be impossible to invite everybody individually without running the risk of causing offence by leaving someone out.

“Therefore, although some invitations will be sent out soon, I am relying on posters, group messages and word of mouth to let interested people know about it. “I am keen to make the afternoon a celebration of Reed School with fun activities for all ages and maypole dancing and guided tours led by the children.”

Over the next few weeks, the children will be learning more about how the school has developed over time and helping to prepare for the party.

Anyone who has a past or present connection with the school or village is welcome to attend, but should RSVP by June 14. Call 01763 848304, email admin@reed.herts.sch.uk or write to Reed First School, Jackson’s Lane, Reed, Royston, SG8 8AB.
