A showcase of Hertfordshire’s farming, food, shopping and entertainment attracted thousands of revellers last weekend.

The annual Hertfordshire County Show once again came to the showground over the bank holiday weekend, with more free entertainment onsite than ever before.

Visitors could watch two record attempts from the UK's Strongest Man, stunts from Atkinson Action Horses and the Extreme Bike Battle, and had the chance to have a go at a climbing wall and in the BMX ring.

There were 170 cattle competing to be crowned winners of the show, but David Sapsed and his two-year-old Simmental bull called Heathbrow Important bagged overall Champion.

Local schools also got involved with the show, going up against each other in a charity horse and cart race called the Scurry.

Townsend Church of England School won the race and will pick which a charity to benefit. Kirsten Davey, from the secondary, said: "It was great to be able to actually take part in an event at the show rather than just watching."

Thousands of children made their own Hertfordshire Lunch using locally produced ingredients in The Hertfordshire Farmyard, and Man's Best Friend did not miss out - there was dog ice cream and assault courses to keep the pets entertained.

A trader at the show, Ellie from Ellie's iPad Art, said: "It is really clear that Herts County Show are investing in local businesses and entrepreneurs and that is really exciting."

Visitor Helen Joynson said she liked the local produce: "It is better than I expected, there is lots to see and do, and it is nice that we can bring the dog."

A member of The Shetland Sheep Society said they attend numerous shows around the country each season, but that Herts' offering is one of their favourites: "It is just the right size show, it is not too small or too big. The competition here is very good and very keen - if you get a red ticket or even a championship you have done pretty well."

It was organised by the Hertfordshire Agricultural Society. Trustee Lucie Stone said: "What a fabulous show - the positive energy and 'family feeling' was its highest this year.

"We had a great turnout and the change in layout this year really helped to move people around the showground to see all of our new exhibits and traders."
