A DETAILED report is to be drawn up on the public response to the Royston Town Centre Strategy.

The report will be discussed when members of North Herts District Council's Royston area committee meet on April 2.

Those responding to the public consultation included Royston Town Council, the Royston Town Centre Partnership, Herts County Council, the Greater Cambridge Partnership and English Heritage.

Cllr Richard Thake, the district council's portfolio holder for planning, said there had been "a healthy number of responses" to the strategy.

He said he wanted to assure the public that the district council would attempt to "accommodate as many views" as possible in the report.

Cllr Thake added: "Once we have completed the process we will have a clear idea of how the local community wants Royston to develop in the next 15 years."

A district council spokes-man said the responses revealed that there was "general support" for the strategy although doubts were raised about the balance between house building and other types of land use.

This was particular relevant to proposals about the town hall site.

This has been earmarked as being able to develop a civic centre complex, but would also need the provision of housing on the site.

There were concerns, too, about the possible reduction of car parking.

But responses were adamant that there was a need to improve Angel Pavement and the routes between key sites around the town centre.

Cllr Fiona Hill, chairman of the Royston area committee, said: "I hope the views submitted will be fully reflected and our committee will be seeking some imminent progress to revitalise the town centre.
