A COURT case accusing the Royston Leisure Centre contractors Pellikaan of failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its employers has been adjourned. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has accused the Dutch contractor Pellikaan of seven health and safety charges after the steel framework of the building collapsed on a construction worker on November 12, 2004. Calum Redman, 35, suffered a broken leg after he was crushed and trapped by part of the metal decking on the first floor, which collapsed as wet concrete was poured into the steel skeleton of the Woodcock Road building. The Heath and Safety Executive claims that Pellikaan took inadequate preventative and protective measures for construction work; did not take all practical steps to prevent danger due to accidental structural collapse; and did not ensure that any temporary structure used to support a permanent structure was erected under the supervision of a competent person. The case was heard at Stevenage Magistrates' Court yesterday (Wednesday), but has been adjourned until further notice.
