MABEL HAGUE celebrated her 105th birthday on Tuesday.

It was a busy day for Mabel, of Southwell Court in Melbourn.

She spent the morning entertaining friends and staff with her favourite past time - singing. And in the afternoon she celebrated with family and friends with two more favourites - sherry and cake.

Not only did Mabel receive gifts and flowers she also received a birthday card from The Queen.

And Mabel said: "I feel ancient, I've been around now for such a long time. But I'm not fed up with life yet."

Mabel is known in Southwell Court for her sense of humour and tongue-in-cheek comments, and often has members of staff in laughter.

Lawrence Cunningham, assistant manager, said: "Mabel has her good and bad days, but when she's with it she gives us a run for our money. She also likes to tell the odd joke and makes us all laugh."

Mabel was born in Nottingham, and she has three daughters and six grandchildren, for whom she used to make clothes.

"I used to be a keen sewer and made clothes for all my daughters and grandchildren. I had a gold medal for it," said Mabel.

Geraldine Woods, deputy manager said: "Mabel has lots of lovely stories and she loves to talk about her family and her life, especially the war."

It was during the Second World War that Mabel met her future husband, to whom she was married to for more than 50 years.

Mabel moved from Nottingham to live with one of her daughters in

Cambridgeshire before moving into Southwell Court in 2003.

Geraldine added: "I've known Mabel for the last three years and she is a real character. She likes to be among people, especially having a natter and a little sherry.

"Mabel is a lovely lady who has a fantastic sense of humour - she's an absolute treasure to know.
