Green-fingered villagers in Melbourn have been using plots on the parish council’s allotment area to grow their own vegetables, amid a wider revival of the grow-your-own ideal.

Ingeburg Phillips is pictured above, receiving a marrow from Barry and Vicky Deville at the St George’s Allotment at their stall at the Melbourn Hub.

Allotments were a particularly valuable source of food during the Second World War and rationing, when people relied on any small patch of earth they could find – with allotments providing the staple diet for our masses.

In the post-war years, interest in grow-your-own dwindled – but now demand for this type of culture has been rekindled, as many folk realise they can grow quality food and veg that tastes even better than produce brought from halfway around the world.
