ALMOST £20.5 million has been allocated to South Cambridgeshire District Council to provide affordable housing - about half its original bid.
The cash comes from the Housing Corporation and is one of the largest grants in the area.
But although awarded £20,494,965 the council had asked for more than £40 million to provide 1,011 homes.
Cllr Liz Heazell, housing portfolio holder, said the district council had "a great deal of work" to do in investigating the funding of projects which were not to be met from the Housing Corporation's grant.
However, it can submit a "mini-bid" next month for the funding of schemes.
"We want to use this as an opportunity to re-submit those unsuccessful bids for further consideration," said Cllr Heazell.
A report is expected to be discussed by the council's cabinet next month.
The £20.5 million grant will cover the costs of providing about 600 homes.
