Grade II listed Royston building classified as at risk
A GRADE II listed building in Royston has been classified as at risk sparking concern from the town’s MP and mayor.
The vacant Manor House Club in Melbourn Street is currently up for sale but English Heritage has put the 18th century town house on its ‘at risk’ register.
“While the first two floors are in good repair, the attic is no longer occupied and windows are broken, letting in rain water and pigeons,” said an English Heritage spokesman.
“This Grade II listed building was added to the Heritage at risk register this year.
“We are concerned that if left, this striking building will rapidly deteriorate.

The Manor House Club moved out of the premises earlier this year, and the building is currently up for sale, with pub chain JD Wetherspoon allegedly looking at the site – although the firm will only confirm that it is interested in placing a pub in Royston.

Royston’s MP Oliver Heald expressed his concern at the building’s condition and has contacted the chief executive of English Heritage to express his worries.
Mr Heald said: “I have contacted English Heritage and got to know what’s happening, and how to best take the issue forward, and I’m waiting to hear from the chief executive.
“It’s a very prominent historic building in the town and certainly it’s important that it is saved.”
Cllr Robert Inwood, Royston’s mayor, said: “After hearing that it’s on English Heritage’s list I will be looking at this in more detail, but I’m concerned for the building’s future.”
