A CROW country tennis player is celebrating after grabbing gold at the Special Olympics.

Sarah Simpson, 25, won a gold medal at the Great Britain Special Olympics, held in Leicester last month.

Representing the Eastern region, Sarah beat East Midlands competitor Jayne Hinnett 6-4 in the final.

Her mum, Sue Simpson, said: "Sarah did brilliantly in the tournament and everybody is very proud of her, it's a great achievement."

Sarah, who lives in Bassingbourn, is also a volunteer in the Garden House Hospice shop in Royston.

Over 2,400 athletes with learning difficulties competed in the games.

Ted Cassidy, chair of Special Olympics Leicester, said: "The athletes truly are an inspiration to us all.
