A VOCALIST has been tempted back into the studio to record a charity album.

Dushy Chetty, of Litlington, is releasing the record under his stage name, Gene Chetty, to raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Entitled Gene Chetty, showbands and other favourites, it features 14 songs, including renditions of hits such as You Light up my Life, Puppet on a String, and Chasing Cars.

Mr Chetty said: "A couple of my colleagues have been affected by cancer, so Cancer Research is a cause which is very close to my heart.

"It was great getting back on the studio again, I've done a few charity concerts recently and it really whetted my appetite for singing. We went down to a studio in London to do the recording, which was a lot of fun."

The singer, who now works at North Hertfordshire College as a Management Consultant, spent six years as frontman of showband Gene and the Gents between 1964 - 1970.

They had a number of hits, and were rated among the top five bands in Northern Ireland, and the top 20 in Ireland overall.

This is not the first time Mr Chetty has released a charity record.

He said: "Last year I did a four track CD for Cancer Research UK which raised over £1,000, so I'm hoping the new one will exceed that total.

"There's still a lot of interest in the showband era, especially in Ireland, but on the CD there is music from six different decades, so I think there's something for everyone," he said.

Gene Chetty, Showbands and Other Favourites, costs £5, and can be purchased from the Goldsmith Centre for Business at North Herts College, or from Litlington Village Store.
