Families and friends were out to meet the pupils as they arrived at their schools, with many choosing to roll up in unusual modes of transport.

At The Meridian School in Royston, pupils attending the Year 11 prom arrived in vehicles including an old-style Routemaster London bus, and a DeLorean car like the one that features in Back to the Future.

Headteacher Dr Michael Firth said he was proud of his students.

He said: “The hall looked amazing: fresh flowers, balloons galore, fairy lights and candelabra. We have great students who have worked really hard and deserved a fantastic evening.”

Fancy dress was the order of the day at Bassingbourn Village College, where a red carpet was rolled out to welcome pupils.

Costumes included Batman and the Joker, while one group of boys arrived dressed as country gentlmen on a float dubbed the “Whaddon Gentleman’s Club”.

Year 11 pupils at Melbourn Village College also celebrated the end of the term at the college in The Moor, Melbourn.
