Royston Swimming Club will honour its 2006 champions on Friday after the most competitive championship meeting in the club's history.

Nearly 100 swimmers fought for club titles at the leisure centre pool in November and will pick up prizes at an awards evening.

Record numbers of youngsters entered the annual club championships after membership numbers rose to new levels last year.

Coach Tricia Dear is delighted that new talents - such as Madison Lambley and Lilly Church - have emerged to share the limelight with established performers Tom Higton and Tom Shield.

She said: "I was thrilled by the numbers we had in the club championships last year. What's pleased me as much as anything is the number of new swimmers that have come to challenge the existing swimmers.

"In some age ranges the established swimmers have managed to hold them off but they've had their work cut out.

"It can only help standards rise and give us more success in galas.
