A doctor who turned to writing following a stroke has gained a strong band of fans with his series of teenage fiction books.

Alex Mellanby, who lives in, Wendy, says his personality changed so much after his stroke that he swapped his stethoscope for a notebook and embarked on his new career.

After entering a short story competition, Alex was contacted by an agent who told him he had promise – but needed to work on his style.

A masters degree in creative writing followed, after which Alex started on his Tregarthur’s series of books.

His novels have been so successful that he is now in discussions with a film company which has an option to the rights to his books.

Alex visited Bassingbourn Village College where he gave a talk and writers’ workshop for Year 7 students. College librarian Ann Lynn said: “The students were spellbound by his ability to make up a story just from suggestions shouted out to him.”
