Budding gardeners got a head start by collecting free tomato and mint seeds at an event to mark Compost Awareness Week.
North Herts District Council (NHDC) in partnership with Recycle Now held a roadshow at Royston Market yesterday (Wednesday).
Information was given on composting and how to grow some simple produce, even in very small gardens.

Cllr Lynda Needham, portfolio holder for waste and recycling, said: "Compost Awareness Week is a great time for people to find out more about being a greener gardener and to learn how to put their compost to good use by using it when growing their own fruit and vegetables.
"With home-grown produce, we can all save a bit of cash and eat nutritious fresh food. The key is to pick something easy to start with like tomatoes or herbs and, even if you only have a windowsill, you can still have a go."

Composting is good for the environment as it reduces the amount of harmful methane gas that is released into the atmosphere. It also produces a free fertiliser that improves soil.
