FREE Christmas lights are on offer to retailers in Royston to help give the town a festive feel.

Town centre manager Geraint Burnell has 40 sets of LED Ultra Bright lights to give away to businesses on a first come, first served basis.

He said the lights were to replace the Christmas lights display which has been being used in the High Street since 2001.

Mr Burnell said: "Since 2001, technology and regulations, particularly with regards to wiring and installation, have moved on.

"The days of the Chamber of Commerce up ladders running cabling and installing trees are gone."

The costs involved in re-wiring and redisplaying the existing lights and decorations would be around £12,000, and Mr Burnell said they did not want to buy new ones until the outcome of the vote on the Royston First Business Improvement District is known.

New displays have been brought for The Cross and the eastern end of Angel Pavement, and it is hoped businesses will take the opportunity to collect their free lights and make displays in the windows to complement these.

Additional sets can also be purchased from Enfield Electrical, which has supplied all the lights, at a reduced price of £20.

A competition will also be running in The Crow later this month, with prizes of £100 and £50 for the best lights displays.
