Foxton in firm opposition to village homes plan

Foxton has come out in overwhelming opposition to plans to build homes in the village.
An application has been submitted to South Cambs District Council by Gladman Developments for up to 95 houses between Shepreth Road and the A10.
The number of houses would represent a 20 per cent increase in the size of the village.
Foxton Parish Council circulated questionnaires regarding the application to every household in the village, and revealed the results at a meeting on Tuesday night.
Foxton Parish Council chairman Nigel Oakley said: “At the meeting the planning committee unanimously recommended refusal of the planning application for the development of land off Shepreth Road.
“The survey of the village showed that 96 per cent of households responding were against the proposed development.
“More than 50 per cent of households responded to the questionnaires we sent out.”
Foxton county councillor Susan van de Ven said: “The cumulative impact of unplanned, speculative planning applications in our area will create a new level of public service requirement not factored into any strategic planning.
“What we are seeing in Foxton is developer opportunism literally aimed at cashing in on a temporary policy vacuum.
“Housing developments need to be properly planned for a reason.
“It’s bitterly disappointing when developers look so ostentatiously at the personal cash reward, at the expense of the local community.”
The developers had previously submitted an application for up to 140 houses in the village, which saw a disapproval rating of 92 per cent from villagers in November.
The planning documented submitted to SCDC states: “The scheme will provide a wide choice of quality homes, including affordable homes, making a contribution that will be really beneficial to the council.
“It will provide public open space and children’s play facilities to benefit existing and new villagers.”
Proposals include the provision of a cycle and pedestrian path along the A10 towards Foxton railway station.
The closing date to submit comments to the district council is on Tuesday.
