There was a serious two-car crash on the edge of Fowlmere yesterday – near the Cereals farming event at Chrishall Grange.

A woman was injured in the crash – involving a Vauxhall Astra and a Land Rover Discovery – at about 11.45am at the junction of Cambridge Road and Fowlmere Road.

An ambulance spokesman said: “The East of England Ambulance Service Trust dispatched a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team, where they cared for a woman in her 40s.”

The spokesman also told the Crow he didn’t have any information on injuries, but that the patient was “conscious on crew arrival” and that she was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for further care.”

The police also attended, and a spokeswoman said there were “slight injuries.”

Following the incident, Fowlmere Parish Council said they would be putting in extra measures to help keep children safe on the school-run in light of the increased traffic due to the Cereals event, which sees 20,000 farmers descend on Chrishall Grange for the arable industry event.

On their Facebook page, the parish council said: “Following the serious accident at the Foxton Fowlmere junction which involved traffic related to cereals – as well as other anecdotal reports of speeding by event attendees – the parish has arranged with the company managing the traffic to set up a pedestrian road crossing arrangement from 8.15am and then again from 2.45pm (today) to at least try to protect children on their way to and from school.

“We will be asking for a far greater level of consultation on this in future years, as the systems that are currently put in place are clearly inadequate.”

Cereals Event Director Jon Day told the Crow: “Cereals did not route inbound traffic through Fowlmere. In the planning for the event Cerals liaises closely with the Highways Authority and during the event the traffic coordinator liaises with Cambridgeshire traffic monitoring centre to co-ordinate traffic flows in response to incidents.”
