A former Bassingbourn 2484 squadron air cadet has passed a rigorous year-long application process and is set to become an RAF officer and pilot.

Matt Smith, 18, was a rank-and-file cadet before becoming a cadet warrant officer, and he will now become a full RAF serviceman.

He said: “Cadets has developed me as a person and provided me with opportunities not found elsewhere, especially with the adventurous side of things!

“Along the way I’ve met some great people and made some brilliant friends, all of whom I will miss. But I do intend to pop down now and then to keep in touch and help the squadron and educate cadets from the perspective of a serviceman, helping others who wish to be in a similar position in years to come. I’d like to thank all who’ve helped me make my cadet career a success, especially Wing Commander Anthony Kelly.”
