A former American serviceman is looking for photographs and information about a wartime hospital.

The United States 163rd General Hospital was located in the grounds of Wimpole Hall from September 1944 until July the following year, treating more than 12,000 servicemen. Of these, only six died at the hospital, with four listed as dead on arrival.

Darden Newman, who served at the hospital and now lives in Tennessee, is looking for memories of the site.

He said: “I visited Royston frequently as we ran a ‘liberty’ truck into town every evening. I recall a small cinema there and remember after the movie we all stood and sang God Save The Queen.

“Also, I remember a small building where hot fish and chips were served out of a walk-up window.

“An English gentleman has graciously spent untold hours erecting a website at www.med-dept.com which consists entirely of US hospital units that operated in the UK during the war. Our hospital is not listed simply because no one in our organisation has, until now, contacted him.”

Anyone with information or pictures of the old hospital can contact Mr Newman on jacrabit@choochoodive.com.
