A young football fan from Litlington had all his dreams come true at once when he was chosen to walk out onto the pitch with the players when global superstars from Manchester United were held by lowly Cambridge United in the FA Cup on Friday night.

Callum Doggett, a pupil at Bassingbourn Primary School, was delighted when he won a radio competition to be a mascot at the game at Abbey Stadium, which was screened live on TV as the League Two side put up the shutters and held the Premier League stars to a goalless draw.

Mum Emma Hamilton, of New Close, said: “We were all so excited. When we found out he’d won the competition, we thought he was going to be dressing up as a mascot, not walking out with them.

“When he realised what was going to happen, this big grin came over his face. He was really happy and excited. I’m so proud.”

The 11-year-old met football legends Ryan Giggs and Alan Shearer during the match.

Callum, who was at the game with his dad Nick and uncle Andrew, said: “My uncle just called them over and they said ‘hi’.

“I was so excited before going out on the pitch, then after it all happened I felt relieved and sort of sad that it was over.”

Emma added: “When we saw him on TV, my youngest son and I were jumping around the living room, it was amazing.”

Callum is a football star in his own right.

He began playing the beautiful game when he was just four years old and has already won 30 medals in his short career.

The football hot shot plays for Cherry Hinton Lions and has been scouted by Ipswich Town Youth Team. He’s left-footed just like his hero Ryan Giggs.

Cambridge United will take on the mighty Reds again in the replay at Old Trafford on Tuesday, kicking off at 7.45pm, in a game which will also be televised.
