A POST Office gutted after a fire spread from a wheelie bin will reopen after around 500,000 worth of repairs.

The Orwell branch, on Town Green Road, will open on August 28 after being closed since the blaze in March 2011.

Post Office spokesman, Wendy Hamilton, said: “We are pleased that we are able to restore services to the area and would like to thank our customers for their patience during this period of temporary closure.

“I would also like to thank staff at nearby branches for taking on the additional workload during this time.

“Customers will find the facilities at this branch, including the range of services, opening hours and access are the same as before the temporary closure and staff at the branch look forward to welcoming everyone back.”

Two teenage boys who started the fire that destroyed the building were cleared of arson and recklessly destroying the building at Cambridge Crown Court, but pleaded guilty to criminal damage to several cars and starting the fire.

The then 14-year-old was ordered to complete a two-year youth rehabilitation order with supervision and three months’ curfew from 8pm-6am daily, and 60 days of “reparation” to the community.

The 16-year-old was ordered to complete an intensive supervision and surveillance requirement and reparation to the community, as well as being made subject to a three-month curfew on the same terms.
