THE CHEQUERS pub in Royston was hit by fire this morning.
Six fire crews - two from Royston and one each from Baldock, Stevenage, Hitchin, and Buntingford - were called to the pub, in the High Street, at 1.09am.
They found a blaze alight on the ground floor of the 16th century building, while the first floor was also smoke logged.
Fire fighters used jets and a hose reel to extinguish the fire, which was put out by 3am.
Four people were involved, but not injured, and the cause thought to be accidental.
A spokesman for The Chequers declined to comment, but said that the pub would remain closed today.
