FERRETS have reduced the rabbit population on a field in Buntingford by 50 per cent.
Roy Jarman of Introl Pest Control has spent the past three months combating the problem on Norfolk Road Playing Fields and Freman College and Edwinstree School playing fields after rabbits were creating holes in the fields making it hazardous for sport.
Mr Jarman said: "We have been reducing the numbers throughout the winter but it's coming up to their breeding season again so we have got about another month to go.
"You won't get rid of all the rabbits - it's a matter of reducing the numbers."
Buntingford Town Council considered various methods to combat the rabbit invasion, including gassing and putting down lion's dung but decided ferreting was the safest option.
Mr Jarman added: "Taking into consideration it's a public place, ferreting is the safest, most efficient, and humane method.
