A festival which started as a small gathering in a woods near Baldock has grown into one of the most cherished three-day celebrations of electronic music in the UK, but the organisers are determined for it to retain its unique identity.

Bygrave Woods is set to come to life once more for Farr Festival later this month, and with a host of DJs plucked from the London clubbing scene the organisers have proved once again that they can compete with the big boys despite operating on smaller budget.

Playing among the twinkly lights and colourful bunting for this year’s festival – which takes place between July 14 and July 16 – will be Worldwide Festival founder Gilles Peterson, house legend Terry Farley, Joy Orbison and Move D.

Festival director Oscar Thornton, who set up the festival with his friend Dom Farr back in 2009, said: “It’s a lot of hard work running a festival, but it’s worth it every time.

“The early days of the festival when it was smaller were magical. We were one of the first boutique festivals, but they are cropping up everywhere now.

“We do have to compete with London prices when booking acts. I’d say that 50 per cent of our audience are people jumping on trains from London, but the rest of the people are from really spread out places.

“We’re building a following all over the UK which is great.”
