LONG serving councillor F John Smith is bowing out after 50 years as a district councillor.
Cllr Smith, who represents Royston Meridian ward and is leader of North Herts district council, will not stand for re-election when a ballot is held in May.
In a statement he said: "It has been a real privilege to serve our locality for this length of time, and my health would permit me to continue.
"But I think that it is probably sensible to relinquish the reigns by not seeking re-election. Better to go of my own choosing!"
However Cllr Smith, who has been leader of the council for the last 11 years, added that he will be standing for election to Royston Town Council.
He added: "I hope I can continue to be of some service, particularly to the folk of Meridian ward.
